Improvisation and Innovation in a Jazz-context

When improvising on my instrument, I develop a musical motif further. The motif is the starting point, consisting of only several notes. By „playing“ – in the real sense of a game – something new comes into existence every moment. By techniques like changing, enlarging, reducing, exaggerating, reversing and other techniques the motif becomes a melody. Here external influences and coincidence also play a role. When improvising within an ensemble, the effect of the methods increases, as we musicians react „with open ears“ to each other.

In companies, there is often a separation between „production“ and „innovation“ – only in the ideal case results from innovation are used in production.
Jazz improvisation combines both processes: the live project („product“ = melody / music), in one person and in real time.
